Cruising over the Titanic site

Today’s temperature out on the deck was more bearable than it had been over the past few days – probably just above 55 degrees or so. Mang-Git and I were able to sit on the deck late this morning with just jeans and T-shirts with a plate of Brie cheese and crackers and get some reading done.

I also got a chance today to snap a few more pictures of the boat:

I’m fine with supporting local efforts, but finally had to give up reading The Cookie Club. I was about 100 pages into it and nothing happened except excessive cookie consumption and several uninteresting (and actually pretty depressing) extramarital affair recounts of the 12 very confusing main characters. I picked up a new book, The Vagrants, instead, which has so far been infinitely more interesting than Cookie Club.

Yesterday night was the Commodore's reception, where everyone got super dressed up and filed into the Queens Room (tea room) for free champagne. I wore a white, floor-length halter dress and Mang-Git wore a suit and tie combo, so I thought our entire ensemble was relatively conservative and wouldn't upset or spur chatter amongst the older generation. I was so right, because when we got there and the Commodore started talking, I was immediately appalled at the number of women 50 years my senior wearing backless, strapless, above-the-knee dresses. It was kind of comical and disturbing at the same time. Upon leaving the Queens Room, I vowed to myself that when I finally look like an old lady, I'm going to do society a favor and dress like an old lady.

We took a walk around the ship yesterday night since we weren't ready to turn in for the night, but also not too keen on hitting up G32 with old, drunk people. It was actually kind of scary, walking around the top deck because it was pitch black, freezing, and silent except for the wind and water. Some people might have thought it was calming to get away from all the lights, but I just had this eerie feeling in the pit of my stomach and had to go back inside after a few minutes. I only just found out over dinner today that us being about 24 miles from the site of the Titanic at the exact time me and Mang-Git went for our nighttime deck stroll might have had something to do with it.
